Port Augusta at a glance

Port Augusta lies at the northern end of Spencer Gulf in South Australia. State listings call it the gateway to the Flinders Ranges and the outback, and the town is a service stop for traffic on the Stuart Highway heading north and for travelers heading toward the Nullarbor. The 2021 Census counted 13,515 people in the urban area. The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden acknowledges the Barngarla and Nukunu people, and describes the town as a meeting place of several language groups.

Most visitors come by car. Adelaide is 307 km away, a little over 3 hours' drive. There are no regular passenger flights to Port Augusta, and a coach service from Adelaide takes longer than the drive. Summers are hot: at the Port Augusta Aero station the mean January high is 34.2 ยฐC, and the mean July high is 17.9 ยฐC with July nights averaging 4.7 ยฐC (Bureau of Meteorology, 2001 to 2026). Prices on this site are in Australian dollars (A$), as listed in 2026, and they change.

What this guide covers

The town, the ranges to the east and the roads north.

This is an independent guide. It is not run by the Port Augusta City Council, a tourism board, a national parks authority, an accommodation provider or a tour operator. It starts with what you can see in town: the Wadlata Outback Centre with its Tunnel of Time, the botanic garden and the lookouts and walks along the waterfront. It then covers the day trips that make Port Augusta useful as a base: the Pichi Richi Railway to Quorn, Mount Remarkable National Park and Alligator Gorge, and Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges.

Further north, the Stuart Highway leads to Coober Pedy and Alice Springs. Pages on getting there, weather, hotels and caravan parks sit alongside. Where a park, a road or a train has dated closures or limits, the date is given. Check current park and road reports before you go.

Port Augusta: frequently asked questions

How far is Port Augusta from Adelaide?

The state description gives 307 km and a little over 3 hours by car. A coach timetable lists a sample trip from Adelaide in 4 hours 22 minutes, so allow more time than by car. See getting there.

Can I fly to Port Augusta?

Not on a regular service. The council says there are no regular passenger flights. Charter and fly-in fly-out flights are arranged separately with the operators.

How far is Wilpena Pound from Port Augusta?

Port Augusta to Hawker is 110 km and Hawker to Wilpena Pound is 64 km, which adds up to about 174 km via Hawker. That is a sum of two published distances, not a measured route, so allow generous time and check road reports. The Flinders Ranges page has the details.

Do I need a park pass for the Flinders Ranges?

Vehicle entry to Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is A$14.40 per vehicle on the park page in 2026, paid before you enter. An older listing shows A$10.90, so check the amount when you pay. Multi-park passes for 2 or 12 months cover Ikara and Mount Remarkable but not camping, which you book separately.

Does the Pichi Richi Railway run every day?

No. It runs on selected days. The Afghan Express between Port Augusta and Quorn leaves at 10:30 a.m. and returns at about 4:30 p.m.; the 2026 adult return fare is A$126. Some trips use diesel locomotives. See the railway page.

Is this the official Port Augusta website?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the council, the state tourism body, the national parks service, the Wadlata Outback Centre, the railway or any tour operator.
