Mount Remarkable National Park at a glance
Mount Remarkable National Park lies in the southern Flinders Ranges. Alligator Gorge is the best known part, and Mambray Creek is the main base for camping. The park is managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia. This guide is independent and is not an official park page.
The park is neither fully closed nor fully open. A fire in February 2025 damaged parts of it, and the park has reopened in stages. Some hubs and walks are open, some are still closed, and there are two full closures planned for November 2026. Read the section on closures below before you set out.

Closures and fire recovery
Treat each of these separately. They are not the same thing.
Part reopening, notice of 27 July 2026
The park notice lists Alligator Gorge, Mambray Creek, Melrose and Willowie as open, along with several walks. The Narrows Hike is listed as open. The Ali Lookout Walk and its viewing platform stay closed, and so does Alligator Lodge.
Full closure 1 to 6 November 2026
Mount Remarkable and Wapma Thura-Southern Flinders Ranges National Park close from 6 p.m. on 1 November until 6 p.m. on 6 November 2026 for pest control.
Full closure 15 to 20 November 2026
A second full closure runs from 6 p.m. on 15 November until 2 p.m. on 20 November 2026.
Fire Danger Season
Backpack campgrounds are closed during the Fire Danger Season. Check the park closures page for the day you plan to visit, because notices change.
Getting to Alligator Gorge and Mambray Creek
The turnoff for Alligator Gorge is about 1 km south of Wilmington on Main North Road. The access road is very steep. It is not suitable for caravans, camper trailers or buses, so leave those at your base. Mambray Creek is reached from National Highway One.
No public road runs through the park. Horrocks Pass and Port Germein Gorge are nearby east-west roads, but they go around the park, not through it. If you are driving up from Adelaide, our getting there guide covers the main route to Port Augusta.

Walking in the gorge
The park describes the gorge floor as uneven and slippery when wet, with steep steps in places. Wear sturdy shoes. Check that your route is open on the day, because the list of open walks changed after the fire.
Carry water. The park's guideline is about 1 litre per hour of physical activity, and there is no guaranteed water supply in the park. Tell someone your route and your return time, because mobile reception is unreliable in remote and steep areas. Wildlife is more active at dawn and dusk, so drive slowly then.

Fees, passes and camping
Prices are as of 2026. Discounts and online surcharges are not listed here.
| Item | What to know |
|---|---|
| Day entry | A$14.40 per vehicle, paid before you enter |
| Accommodation | From A$27.50 per night, listed on the park page |
| Multi-park pass | 2-month or 12-month passes cover Ikara-Flinders Ranges and Mount Remarkable, but not camping |
| Camping booking | Book ahead. For most booked vehicle campgrounds the separate vehicle entry fee does not apply |
| Hiker-only sites | Do not include vehicle entry |
Do not simply add entry and camping together. Your booking confirmation and the campsite description decide what you pay. Mambray Creek is listed for tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans, with hot showers and toilets. Book and pay before you arrive. A multi-park pass is not required for a single day visit, because a one-off vehicle entry is sold separately. Prices of the passes are not listed here, so check them when you book.
Plan the rest of your trip
Mount Remarkable fits well with other stops in the region. Combine it with the heritage train to Quorn, or add the bigger scenery further north in the ranges around Wilpena Pound.
Pick a cooler time of year for walking. Port Augusta's average daily maximum in July is 17.9 °C and in January 34.2 °C (Bureau of Meteorology, airport station, 2026). The park's weather will differ from the airport's, so check the forecast.
