Where to stay in Port Augusta

Port Augusta is a stopover town. It sits on the Stuart Highway at the head of Spencer Gulf, 307 km from Adelaide, and it is a natural base for the Flinders Ranges, Mount Remarkable or the road north. A night here splits the long drive and lets you start the Ranges with a full day.

The places below are named with the location given by the operator or a listing. Room rates, availability and facilities change, so check them with the property before you book. This site is independent and does not run or sell any accommodation.

Choosing a base in town

Location matters more than a rating when you stay one night.

Port Augusta West

The Standpipe Golf Motor Inn is on Daw Street in Port Augusta West. The Water Tower Lookout on Mitchell Terrace is in the same part of town and is free to visit. The coach stops here on request at Coles Express, 34 Eyre Highway. If you arrive by Stateliner coach, check which stop is closest to your bed.

Marryatt Street

The Majestic Oasis Apartments are listed on Marryatt Street. Apartments suit stays of two nights or more, when you want a kitchen and some room to spread out after days on the road.

Near the Highway One junction

The Acacia Ridge Motor Inn is next to the Discovery Parks caravan park, on the corner of Highway One and Stokes Terrace. It is a motel and is listed as a neighbour of the park, not as a caravan site.

Close to the sights

The Wadlata Outback Centre is at 41 Flinders Terrace, and the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is at 144 Stuart Highway. Check the address of your bed against these when you plan a walk or a morning visit.

What to check before you book

Questions to ask the property directly.

Parking and trailers

Ask whether there is room for a trailer, a roof box or a larger rental vehicle. Do not assume that parking suits every vehicle.

Arrival time

If you arrive late after a long drive or a coach ride, tell the property the time in advance and ask how to collect your key.

Long weekends and school holidays

If your dates fall on a long weekend or a school holiday, book earlier.

Opening hours on arrival day

The Visitor Information Centre in the Wadlata Outback Centre is listed as open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends. The garden gates open daily from 7:30 a.m. until sunset. Hours can differ, so check before you plan an afternoon around them.

Meals and shops

Ask whether breakfast is offered or whether a kitchen is available. Buy supplies in town before you head for the parks.

Sleeping further out

If your plan is the Ranges, you can also stay closer to the parks.

Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park lists accommodation and camping from A$12.30 per night in 2026, and Mount Remarkable National Park from A$27.50 per night. Camping is booked in advance, and a multi-park pass does not cover it. Wilpena Pound Resort and its campground are inside the Ikara park. Hawker is the closest town for fuel and supplies on the way, 64 km from Wilpena Pound.

Port Augusta accommodation: frequently asked questions

Is one night enough in Port Augusta?

For a stopover, yes. You can see the Wadlata Outback Centre and the Arid Lands Botanic Garden in a day. If you plan the Flinders Ranges or Mount Remarkable as day trips, stay two or three nights.

Which part of town should I choose?

That depends on your plans. Port Augusta West has the coach request stop, and the Highway One junction is on the road north. Check each address against your first stop of the day.

Do I need to book in advance?

It is safer to book ahead for long weekends and school holidays. A late arrival is easier with a confirmed room.

Are there places to stay near Wilpena Pound?

Yes. Wilpena Pound Resort and its campground are inside Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park. Camping in the park is booked in advance.

Can I park a campervan at a motel?

Ask the property. If you travel in a campervan or caravan, a caravan park is the more usual choice.
