There is no regular passenger flight to the town, and the Ghan does not list Port Augusta as a passenger stop in its 2026 timetable. So plan your flight into Adelaide and continue from there by road. By coach

Stateliner runs a service on Adelaide, Port Pirie, Port Augusta and Whyalla. The main stops are the Adelaide Central Bus Station at 85 Franklin Street and OTR Port Augusta East. Port Augusta West is a stop on request at Coles Express, 34 Eyre Highway. The timetable shows one example run leaving Adelaide at 08:25 and reaching Port Augusta East at 12:47. Other runs differ, so check the day you travel.

Book at least 48 hours ahead, especially on long weekends and in school holidays, and check in 30 minutes before departure. No service runs on Christmas Day. New fares apply to travel from 1 October 2026, so look up the current fare when you book.

By air

The Port Augusta Airport has no regular passenger transport flights. It serves fly-in fly-out workforce flights and charters, and the terminal is open only during those operating hours. For a charter, ask the operator directly. Unsecured short-term parking near the terminal is limited to 24 hours. If you want to fly, land in Adelaide and drive or take the coach.

By train

The Ghan timetable for 2026 shows Adelaide to Darwin departures on Sundays from March to November, plus a Wednesday service from April to October. Port Augusta is not listed there as a passenger stop. The operator does not allow you to leave the trip at operational or excursion stops. A Flinders Ranges excursion arriving in Port Augusta is advertised for the 2027 Legendary Ghan package, which is a future paid trip and not a public connection in 2026.

Entry rules for overseas visitors

These rules depend on your nationality. Check the current rules before you book.

Visitors from Germany

You need a visa before you travel. The German Foreign Office points to the eVisitor, which is free, valid for 12 months and allows several entries of up to 3 months each. Your passport must be valid for the whole stay. At present the ministry warns of longer processing times, especially for Working Holiday applications, so apply early.

Visitors from the United Kingdom

Your passport must be valid for the length of your stay, and a visa is required. The eVisitor has no application or service fee, while an ETA may carry a service fee. Transit countries can ask for longer passport validity.

Food and plant products

Declare or dispose of food, animal products and plant products when you arrive. This matters if you plan to drive north with supplies bought abroad.

After you arrive

Where to go next and how to plan it.

From Port Augusta, Hawker is 110 km away and Wilpena Pound is roughly 174 km via Hawker, a figure added up from published distances and not a measured route. Fuel and mobile coverage can be limited in the Flinders Ranges, so plan stops before you leave town.
