Things to Do in Port Augusta

Port Augusta rewards a day or two in town and works well as a base for the ranges and the highway north. Here is what to see, what it costs in 2026 and what is closed.

  • โ˜… Hand-picked, top-rated tours
  • ๐Ÿš™ Outback drives and parks explained

A day in town, then the ranges

The sights in Port Augusta itself are compact and mostly cheap. The Wadlata Outback Centre explains the region, the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden is free to enter, and the Water Tower Lookout gives a view of town, gulf and ranges. The longer trips start from here: a heritage train to Quorn, the gorges of Mount Remarkable and the walls of Wilpena Pound.

Not everything on older lists is open. The historic wharf has been closed since 2019, and some park trails have dated closures. Opening hours and prices below are those published for 2026. Check them again before you go.

In town

Places you can reach on foot or with a short drive.

Wadlata Outback Centre

The centre is at 41 Flinders Terrace. Its Tunnel of Time is an interpretive exhibition on the region, including Aboriginal history, exploration and settlement, fossils and outback supply. The visitor information centre is listed as open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at weekends, and it sells park passes. Admission prices are not covered here, so check the current rates before you go.

Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden

The garden is at 144 Stuart Highway. Entry is free and donations are welcome. The gates are open daily from 7:30 a.m. to sunset, and the visitor center opens at 9 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. at weekends. There are four marked walks, including the Highlights Walk and the Red Cliff Walk. The garden closes on days of catastrophic fire danger.

Water Tower Lookout

The lookout is on Mitchell Terrace in Port Augusta West. It is free, with parking and a picnic area. The views take in the town, the gulf and the ranges. Platform access and daily climbing hours are not published, so treat the view from the platform as a bonus.

The Coastal Path

A shared walking and cycling path runs from Back Beach to the botanic garden and can be joined at several points. A walking guide lists 6.4 km one way and 2 hours in its fact box but 7.8 km in its description, so the exact length depends on where you start and finish.

Eastside Foreshore

The foreshore has a fishing jetty, swimming pontoons, a walking and cycling path, toilets, a playground, a skate park and barbecue areas. These are separate from the historic wharf.

The wharf, from a distance

The historic wharf has been fenced off since 2019 for structural and safety reasons. The state project page lists the design phase, with test piles completed in July 2026, and no reopening date. You will not be able to walk out on it.

On the water: fishing and swimming

Spencer Gulf has rules that older guides do not mention.

The Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park has 8 sanctuary zones where fishing and other taking of marine life are banned. Match your fishing spot to the zone map before you cast. Southern Calamari is closed to fishing in both gulfs until 30 April 2027, and a general sign for squid fishing on a tourism page does not change that.

After the algal bloom, avoid foamy or unusually colored water and leave the water if it irritates your skin or eyes. Do not touch, move or dispose of dead or sick marine animals. None of this is a general swimming ban, and none of it makes every bay safe, so read the signs on the day.

Things to do: frequently asked questions

What is free to do in Port Augusta?

Entry to the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden and to the Water Tower Lookout is free, and the Coastal Path and the Eastside Foreshore have no entry fee. Donations are welcome at the garden. Vehicle entry to the national parks is paid separately.

Can I fish from the wharf?

No. The historic wharf has been closed since 2019. The Eastside Foreshore has a separate fishing jetty, and fishing rules still apply, including the sanctuary zones of the Upper Spencer Gulf Marine Park and the Southern Calamari closure.

How much time do I need in Port Augusta?

A day covers the botanic garden, the Wadlata Outback Centre and the lookout. Add a second day for the Pichi Richi Railway or Mount Remarkable, and a third for Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges.

Is Wilpena Pound a day trip from Port Augusta?

It is possible, but long. Hawker is 110 km from Port Augusta and Wilpena Pound is a further 64 km. That is about 174 km each way via Hawker, and there are tours and overnight options on the tours page.

When is the best time for these sights?

The cooler months suit walking. The mean daily high at Port Augusta Aero is 34.2 ยฐC in January and 17.9 ยฐC in July, so winter mornings are cold and summer afternoons are hot. See the weather page.
