Caravan parks in Port Augusta

Port Augusta is a natural stop for caravans and motorhomes. Three highways meet here, and both the Flinders Ranges and the road north start from the town. Two caravan parks are named below: Discovery Parks Port Augusta and BIG4 Port Augusta Shoreline. Each has its own booking rules, so read them before you arrive.

This site is independent and does not run or sell any park. Site prices vary by category and date, so ask the park for a quote for your dates and vehicle.

The two parks in detail

What to know before you book.

Discovery Parks Port Augusta

The park is on the corner of Highway One and Stokes Terrace. The operator lists cabins, a camp kitchen, a pool, a laundry, a dump point and a store. Park names change over time, so match an older guide to the street location and not to a brand name.

Campfires are banned from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027. Outside those dates, management can also ban them when conditions require, so ask on arrival.

BIG4 Port Augusta Shoreline

The park is at 59 to 69 Gardiner Avenue on the waterfront. It offers powered, unpowered and ensuite powered sites. Check-in is at 2 p.m. and check-out at 10 a.m. If you arrive after 6 p.m., arrange it with the park beforehand.

Rates are based on 2 people, and each extra person is charged separately. Children under 4 stay free under the booking conditions, and the child category covers ages 4 to 17. The pool is seasonal, so ask about its dates.

Fuel before the Ranges

Hawker Motors on the Cradock and Wilpena Road in Hawker lists diesel and petrol, a shop and tyre service. Hours run from 07:30 to 18:00 from mid-March to mid-November and from 08:00 to 17:00 for the rest of the year. Fuel grades are not guaranteed, so fill up in Port Augusta first.

Next to the Discovery park: a motel

The Acacia Ridge Motor Inn is listed as a neighbouring motel of the Discovery park. It is a motel and not a caravan site. If you want a room instead of a site, see the accommodation page.

Where to stay โ†’

Camping in the national parks

A caravan park in town is not the same as a national park campground.

Book first, even with a pass

Camping in the national parks is booked in advance, and a multi-park pass does not include it. For most booked vehicle campgrounds the separate vehicle entry fee falls away. Hiker-only campgrounds do not include vehicle entry. Your booking confirmation and the site description decide what applies.

Times differ from private parks

Park campgrounds list arrival from 1 p.m. and departure by 11 a.m. Do not apply these times to a private caravan park.

Mount Remarkable: Mambray Creek

Mambray Creek has sites for tents, camper trailers, campervans and caravans, with hot showers and toilets. Book and pay before you arrive. Backpack campgrounds in the park close during the Fire Danger Season. Alligator Gorge has a very steep access road that does not suit caravans, camper trailers or buses.

Mount Remarkable โ†’

Ikara-Flinders Ranges

Accommodation and camping start from A$12.30 per night in 2026, and the vehicle entry fee is A$14.40 per vehicle, so check the current fees before you go. Wilpena Pound Resort has a campground inside the park.

Parking, dumping and free camping

Where a rig can stop in town.

The Wadlata Outback Centre has parking for cars, buses and RVs, along with toilets and Wi-Fi, but it is not an overnight site. The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden at 144 Stuart Highway has drive-through parking for caravans and motorhomes, including at its lookouts. Both are for day visits. Do not assume that you may sleep at the jetty, the foreshore or a lookout. Follow local signs and choose a park.
